Radiohead explain Glastonbury snub

Radiohead turned down an opportunity to perform at Glastonbury because they did not wish to be seen as the festival's "house band".

Though Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis asked the group to play at this year's festival, frontman Thom Yorke decided to concentrate on performing at last night's Glasgow Green gig.

"We could have slotted it in. But we didn't want to," guitarist Ed O'Brien told the Daily Record. "Thom's spoken to Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis. The reason we didn't do it was because we did it on Hail To the Thief tour.

"We felt it wasn't appropriate to do it this year because we didn't want to be the Glastonbury house band. It's such a special gig, it's almost like you have to wait your turn."

Yorke previously denied claims that he pulled out of this year's festival on environmental grounds.

Today's SIFF lineup

Heading into its final weekend, SIFF 2008 returns for three days to the Cinerama, where Dan Ireland's "Jolene" has its world premiere at 9:30 tonight. SIFF's co-founder, Ireland previously scored with "The Whole Wide World" and "Mrs. Palfrey at The Claremont." Like those films, this adaptation of an E.L. Doctorow short story gives several superb actors a chance to demonstrate their range. Frances Fisher, Dermot Mulroney and Michael Vartan are especially impressive in change-of-pace parts, while the title role — a resilient girl who bounces back from a series of disastrous relationships — is capably handled by an Ireland discovery, Jessica Chastain.

Hadouken! kick of Liverpool Sound City in sweaty style

Hadouken! kicked off Liverpool Sound City last night (May 27) in a performance which saw the Carling Academy that saw the ceiling dripping with sweat as the crowd kicked off the week-long festival in style.

Taking the stage at 10pm (BST), the new-ravers whipped the equally new-rave crowd into a frenzy with 'Declaration Of War', 'Liquid Lives' and a cover of The Prodigy's 1996 UK Number One single 'Breathe'.

Finishing on 'That Boy, That Girl', frontman James Smith left the stage topless and the crowd exhausted.

Queues jammed both the entrance and box office for the show, where gig-goers were searched for glowsticks before being allowed into the venue. Not that it stopped many being visible during the night.

Before Hadouken!'s headline set Does It Offend You Yeah? got the rammed venue warmed-up with a characteristically energetic show that included a cowbell-led 'Battle Royale' and finisher 'We Are Rockstars'.

Earlier local band Soft Toy Emergency were also received jubilant crowd reaction, with their songs 'Sorry', 'Fame School' and Justice cover 'DVNO'.

Meanwhile downstairs in the Academy 2 Crystal Castles tore through tunes such as 'Alice Practice' and 'Air War' during a riotous show that saw singer Alice Glass spend most of the time in the crowd.

Support for Crystal Castles came from The Ghost Frequency, The Dead Set and scousers Indica Ritual.

Liverpool Sound City continues tonight (May 28) with acts including Santogold, Ladyhawke and Lightspeed Champion set to play.
